Product Description
Revised and completely updated for the 2008 National Electric Code, this small manual continues its 75-year history of demonstrating how to install safe, convenient, and economical wiring. Encouraging readers to tackle jobs small and large, the guide covers everything from repairing a table lamp to wiring a whole house. After introducing the basics—standards, codes, safety practices, and an overview of how electricity is measured and delivered—chapters show how to design a layout for lights, switches, and receptacles; run a line from a utility pole; install wires, circuits, and grounds; and handle special projects such as replacing old wiring and wiring detached garages and accessory buildings.

A Great Reference for the Handyman January 7, 2009 Joseph A. Purcell (CA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is a great resource for those handymen who are comfortable working with electricity. This book is very easy to read and not only covers the enforced National Electrical Code (NEC) but also provides detailed installation procedures of home electrical material/devices such as wiring, receptacles, lighting fixtures & etc. With prolific pictures, it shows devices and material available and required for specific tasks. In addition it explains & shows correct installation procedures.
As a retired electrical engineer for 18 years, I purchased this book to re-familiarize myself with the latest NEC codes. I can attest to this books value to those having a small or large electrical project and wish to install a safe installation.
Wouldn't be without it October 4, 2008 Office Fan (Dayton, Ohio) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
This book (or its previous editions) has been invaluable to this do-it-yourself owner of four different homes over the years. With the book in one hand and tools in the other I have been able to rewire much of two older homes, newly wire finished basements in two others and completely rewire a remodelled kitchen (all up to the current code of the time). The material is well organized and presented in language understandable to the non-professional.

THE BEST HANDS-ON, HOW-TO WIRING BOOK FOR THE LAYMAN AND TRADESMAN
I've owned and used and loaned and lost various editions since the 60's, both in my home and on the job as a carpenter/stagehand. It's Indispensable for the once-in-a-while electrician or homeowner whether he/she is adding a single outlet or upgrading a new kitchen. Working with this book will give you confidence in the safety, utility, and re-salability of your project. Nothing extraneous, excellent index, gender friendly. No condescension.
The illustrations are the best in the business, and there are an awful lot of fancy wiring books to choose from. The precise (and time honored) diagrams and carefully edited text provide the reader with the information needed to do a good, safe, and efficient job.
Wiring Simplified: Based on the 2008 National Electrical Code
Clear, helpful guide to DIY home wiring August 28, 2009 Michael Sandman (Brookline, MA United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a straightforward, easy to understand book if you've had a little bit of exposure to home wiring. There are good diagrams (but few photos) and the common kinds of things you might want to do in a home or on a farm are covered well. It explains common devices like 2-way and 3-way switches and circuit breakers, and it covers both 110 and 220 volt circuits. The text explains how to do things like adding extensions and switches in conformance with the 2008 edition of the national electrical code. Compliance with the code is the best way to make sure the wiring you do is safe, properly grounded and not going to cause a fire. This book is a good way to make sure you know what to do before you pick up that pair of pliers. I had an edition from the late 1970s, and I got this new one when I started a project that requires adding a couple of circuits for a basement room I'm finishing. The text of this edition is easier to understand and the diagrams are clearer than in the older one, and of course the electrical code has changed substantially.
As an alternative or a step beyond this book, consider the Black & Decker Complete Book of Home Wiring, which has excellent photographs and covers wiring devices for home theater and other related low voltage applications . If you're a complete novice, the Black & Decker book is probably a better place to start.
This is the Electrical Handbook to own. November 17, 2009 T. Cruit (Great Falls, MT) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this book for a friend but own an older revision. Back when I was 14 I was able to figure out how to run electricity out to my parents garage and install lights and receptacles using this book. What I like most about this book is that it contains the information a do-it-yourselfer will need and no fluff. All instruction is written so that a do-it-yourselfer can wire circuits in compliance with the National Electric Code.
